Relocating to the United Kingdom to join a partner is a monumental life step. However, the complexity of the Home Office’s immigration rules means that many applications falter at the first hurdle: the UK spouse visa income requirements. For Hong Kong applicants, navigating these regulations requires precision, especially following recent significant policy shifts.

The financial thresholds are set to ensure that a couple can support themselves without recourse to public funds. If you are relying on employment, pensions, or substantial savings, understanding the evidentiary threshold is vital. This guide provides a comprehensive breakdown of the current UK spouse visa financial requirements, including the exemption criteria and formulas to calculate savings, to help secure your future in Britain.

Understanding the New 2024-2026 UK Spouse Visa Financial Requirements

For initial applications, the applicant’s own overseas income can only be counted if they are already in the UK lawfully and have been working there with permission for at least 6 months at the time of application. The most significant change in recent years has been the sharp increase in the minimum income threshold. As of mid 2024 and continuing in 2026, the combined income threshold for the UK spouse visa financial requirements has risen from £18,600 to £29,000 per annum [1], subject to future policy updates. This figure represents a shift away from the long-standing lower threshold, aiming to ensure that families are self-sufficient and do not place undue pressure on public funds.

However, there is a critical exception known as transitional arrangements. If you or your sponsor applied for your first spouse visa before 11 April 2024, you will likely continue to be assessed against the previous, lower threshold of £18,600 for your extension and indefinite leave to remain applications [2]. This protection applies as long as you have had continuous leave on the same route. The financial requirement is assessed on the date of application, not the decision date. It applies to the UK-based sponsor — the British citizen, settled person, or individual with pre-settled status who is sponsoring their partner.

How to Calculate Minimum Income Required

Meeting the minimum income requirements of £29,000 for a UK spouse visa requires a clear understanding of what is accepted as “gross annual income”. This is calculated by assessing the UK sponsor’s income over a specific period — usually the last 6 or 12 months — under a specific category (e.g., Category A or B for employment). The following table illustrates the primary categories used to satisfy the requisites [3]:

Category

Source of Income

Key Evidence Required

Category A

Salary (with current employer over 6 months)

6 months of payslips and bank statements

Category B

Salary (with current employer fewer than 6 months)

12 months of employment history evidence

Category C

Non-employment income (Rent/Dividends)

Tenancy agreements or dividend vouchers

Category D

Cash Savings

Bank statements showing funds held for 6 months

Category E

Pension

Official pension statements and bank deposits

Most applicants rely on Category A when applying. However, if you have recently changed jobs in Hong Kong or the UK, you must apply under Category B, which requires you to prove you met the threshold over the last 12 months as well as in your current role.

Diverse Ways to Satisfy the Financial Requirements

There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to proving you meet the UK spouse visa financial requirements. The Home Office allows for a combination of various income streams, provided they fall within the permitted categories. For instance, you can often combine employment income with non-employment income, such as property rental or stocks. The following are the most common sources of income acknowledged by the Home Office:

Applicant’s Income (Under Specific Conditions)

When determining what counts as income for the spouse visa purposes, it is vital to remember that only the sponsor’s income can be counted if the applicant is applying from outside the UK. If the applicant is already in the UK with permission to work, their income can also be combined. Documentation must be perfect; even a single missing bank statement can lead to a potential refusal of your application under the strict Immigration Rules Appendix FM-SE.

Using Cash Savings to Bridge the Shortfall

Meeting the UK spouse visa income requirements can be achieved with or without savings. If relying solely on income, you must demonstrate a gross annual income of at least £29,000. Alternatively, you can use savings to meet the requirement by holding £88,500 for at least 6 months. The cash savings required can be calculated with this formula [1]:

(Annual Income Gap x 2.5) + £16,000

For example, if your income is £25,000, your gap is £4,000. You would need (£4,000 x 2.5) + £16,000 = £26,000 in savings. This 2.5 multiplier reflects the 2.5‑year visa period, and a different multiplier applies for Indefinite Leave to Remain applications. It is important to note that these funds must have been under your control for at least 6 months prior to the application to meet the requirements.

Financial Requirements For Self-Employed Applicants

For self-employed applicants, the financial requirement is assessed under Category F or G, which involves a more rigorous evidence process than standard employment. Unlike salaried individuals, you must demonstrate your income based on official tax records over a completed financial year (or an average of 2 years), with all documents needing to strictly meet the Home Office specifications. Here is the guide on how to calculate income for self-employed applicants [3]:

You must provide evidence from the last full financial year (Category F) or an average of the last two financial years (Category G).

Required documents include HMRC Self-Assessment tax returns and Statement of Account (SA302).

Personal and business bank statements for the relevant period are mandatory.

Proof of ongoing trading at the time of application must be submitted.

All accounts must be supported by a regulated accountant’s certificate.

UK Spouse Visa Financial Requirement Exemptions

An exemption is available for those whose sponsors receive specific “gatekeeper” benefits. If the UK sponsor receives Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Carer’s Allowance, the standard £29,000 threshold is waived [4].
In these cases, the applicant must instead demonstrate “adequate maintenance.” This means showing that, after housing costs are paid, the family has at least the same amount of income as a family on Income Support would have at the time of application. As a proof, you must pass a specific calculation:

Net Weekly Income (A) － Weekly Housing Costs (B) ≥ weekly Income Support rate for your family size (C) .

The weekly income support rate depends on current benefit rates. You must check the exact rates on GOV.UK when applying. While the threshold is lower, the burden of proof for this UK spouse visa financial requirement exemption remains high, requiring a detailed breakdown of weekly income and expenditure.

Secure Your Future with British Connections

Determining if your specific circumstances qualify for the exemption can be overwhelming, especially with the high stakes involved for your family. At British Connections, we specialise in helping Hong Kong applicants decode all the income requirements for a UK spouse visa to build an airtight case. Contact us to secure expert guidance for your UK Spouse Visa journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I combine income and savings to meet the UK spouse visa financial requirements?

Yes. You can combine cash savings with employment income to bridge a shortfall, but only savings above £16,000 count. You can calculate how much savings you need to hold using the formula: (Annual Income Gap × 2.5) + £16,000.

2. Does the financial requirement change if I have children?

No. For applications made after 11 April 2024, the threshold is a flat £29,000 per year, regardless of how many children are included. This simplified the previous system where each child added to the required income.

3. What is the most common reason for failing the UK spouse visa financial requirements?

Submission of insufficient or non-compliant evidence. Even if you meet the income threshold, failing to provide documentation, such as bank statements and employer letters, in the specific format required may result in a rejection.

If you are planning to bring an adult family member to the UK for long‑term personal care, the Adult Dependent Relative Visa (ADR) can be a pathway. Understanding the Adult Dependent Relative Visa fee, typical processing time, success rate, and the requirements is vital for building a strong case.

Understanding the Adult Dependent Relative Visa

The ADR route allows individuals aged 18 or over, including parents, grandparents, siblings, or adult children, to join a UK-based relative who is British, settled, or protected, provided you need long‑term personal care that is not reasonably available in your home country. Ensuring your case clearly demonstrates this dependency is crucial to overcoming the high rejection rates and securing a favourable outcome.

Adult Dependent Relative Visa Fee

The visa fee for the ADR visa is significant. It costs £3,413 for an Adult Dependent Relative Visa Fee application from 9 April 2025 for applicants applying outside the UK. For those who are applying within the UK, the fee would be £1,321.

Applicants might also need to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of their application.

For each adult it costs:

£2,587.50 if you are staying for 2 years and 6 months

£3,105 if you are staying for 2 years and 9 months

£5,175 if you are staying for 5 years

Adult Dependent Relative Visa Processing Time

When applying for an Adult Dependent Relative Visa from outside the UK, the standard processing time for a decision is approximately 12 weeks. Applicants should be aware that, unlike other family visa routes, the Adult Dependent Relative category is explicitly excluded from eligibility for expedited processing through the Super Priority service.

Adult Dependent Relative Visa Requirements & Documents

Apart from the processing time of an Adult Dependent Relative Visa, it is also crucial to understand the requirements and documents needed in order to qualify for the visa.

Must demonstrate need for long-term personal care due to age, illness, or disability; everyday tasks like washing, dressing, cooking must be impacted.

Must prove care is not reasonably available or affordable in the home country.

Sponsor must be settled, a British or Irish citizen, or have protection/refugee status.

Sponsor must confirm ability to support and accommodate you without recourse to public funds.

Essential Documents

Prepare the following to substantiate the application:

Medical evidence, professional reports, prescriptions, care assessments showing dependency.

Sponsor’s proof of settlement/citizenship/legal status (e.g. BRP, passport).

Evidence that long‑term care is not available in your country (e.g. local care service availability documentation).

Sponsor’s accommodation and financial documentation demonstrating ability to support.

Completed visa application form, biometrics confirmation.

Compiling robust Adult Dependent Relative Visa documents is critical, as submission of inadequate or vague documents is a common cause of refusal or might lead to longer Adult Dependent Relative Visa processing time.

How to Apply for a UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa

Below is a simplified step-by-step guide to help you understand how to apply:

1. Check Eligibility Requirements

Ensure the applicant requires long-term personal care due to age, illness, or disability and that such care is not reasonably available or affordable in their home country. The UK-based sponsor must be a British citizen, settled person, or hold refugee/humanitarian protection status.

2. Gather Medical and Dependency Evidence

Compile medical reports, care assessments, prescriptions, and any other documentation confirming the applicant’s condition and care needs. Demonstrating genuine dependency on the UK sponsor is crucial to improve the Adult Dependent Relative Visa success rate.

3. Assess Financial and Accommodation Capacity

The UK sponsor must show that they can financially support and accommodate the applicant without access to public funds. Collect bank statements, income proof, tenancy agreements or property ownership documents.

4. Complete the Online Visa Application

Submit the application on the official UK government visa portal. Select the “Adult Dependent Relative Visa” category. Pay the application fee and the immigration health surcharge (amount varies depending on the length of stay).

5. Book and Attend a Biometrics Appointment

After submission, the applicant must schedule and attend a biometrics appointment at a local visa application centre in their country. This includes fingerprinting and photographs.

6. Submit Supporting Documents

Upload all required supporting documents through the online platform or bring them to your biometrics appointment. Missing or vague documents are a common cause of visa refusals and longer Adult Dependent Relative Visa processing time.

7. Wait for a Decision

Visa decisions can take up to 12 weeks. Note that Super Priority processing is not available for this visa type. During this period, applicants should avoid travel and be prepared to respond to any additional document requests from the Home Office.

How to Increase Adult Dependent Relative Visa Success Rate

The Adult Dependent Relative Visa route is known for low success rate due to strict requirements and the need for extensive evidence. Here are practical tips to improve your chances of success:

Provide Comprehensive Medical Evidence

Submit detailed medical reports from qualified healthcare professionals, clearly outlining the applicant’s health condition, the level of care required, and how this care cannot be obtained or afforded in the home country.

Show Genuine Dependency

Provide documents that illustrate the ongoing relationship and dependency between the UK sponsor and the applicant, such as records of regular financial support, communication, or previous visits. These could help increase the success rate of Adult Dependent Relative Visa applications.

Meet Financial Requirements

Ensure that the UK-based relative meets the financial requirements and can demonstrate the ability to support and accommodate the applicant without recourse to public funds.

Seek Professional Advice

Consider consulting an experienced immigration lawyer to check the application, address potential weaknesses, and help gather the strongest possible supporting evidence.

FAQs About Adult Dependent Relative Visa

1. What is the current Adult Dependent Relative Visa fee?
The Adult Dependent Relative Visa fee is £3,413 for applications made outside the UK and £1,321 for those applying from within the UK (as of April 2025). Applicants should also budget for the healthcare surcharge, which varies depending on the length of stay.

2. How long does the Adult Dependent Relative Visa processing time usually take?
The standard Adult Dependent Relative Visa processing time is typically up to 12 weeks from the date of application. However, times may vary depending on your circumstances and the complexity of your case. Applicants in the UK may pay for super priority service to receive a faster decision.

3. Why is the Adult Dependent Relative Visa success rate so low?
The Adult Dependent Relative Visa success rate is relatively low due to the strict eligibility criteria and the requirement to provide extensive evidence. Applications are often refused if they do not convincingly demonstrate the need for long-term personal care and the unavailability of such care in the applicant’s home country.

4. Can I appeal if my Adult Dependent Relative Visa application is refused?
Yes, you may have the right to appeal if your application is refused. It is important to review the refusal letter carefully and seek professional advice to understand your options and strengthen your case before proceeding with an appeal or a fresh application.

5. What are the financial requirements to apply for a UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa?
To apply for an Adult Dependent Relative Visa, the UK sponsor must demonstrate sufficient financial means to support and accommodate the applicant without recourse to public funds. There is no specific minimum income threshold, unlike the Spouse Visa route, but the Home Office will closely examine: the sponsor’s income and savings, ongoing financial responsibilities (e.g. rent, dependents), adequate accommodation without overcrowding and sustainable financial plan to care for the applicant long-term.

If you are currently living in the UK and wish for your child to join you from overseas, understanding the Child Dependant Visa UK requirements is essential. This visa pathway allows eligible children to reside in the UK alongside their parent(s), ensuring families can remain united while accessing UK education and healthcare services.

This guide covers the eligibility criteria, financial conditions, required documents for a Child Dependant Visa UK, costs, application steps, and typical processing times.

Understanding the Child Dependant Visa UK

The Child Dependant Visa UK is part of the UK’s broader immigration system, allows children under 18 to enter or remain in the UK with a parent who is either:

A British citizen or settled in the UK (i.e. holding Indefinite Leave to Remain)

On a partner/spouse visa

On a temporary visa, such as a Skilled Worker or Student visa

To qualify, the child must:

Be under 18 at the time of application

Be financially and emotionally dependent on the parent

Not be married or living independently

Be applying to live with a parent who is legally in the UK or applying to enter the UK

Child Dependant Visa UK Requirements

To qualify for this visa, both the child applicant and sponsoring parent must meet specific criteria set by the UK Home Office. These requirements of the UK Child Dependant Visa ensure that the child is genuinely dependent and that adequate arrangements are in place for their care and support in the UK.

1. Age and Dependency

The applicant must be under 18 years old on the date of application. If the child is aged 16 or 17, the Home Office will scrutinise their dependency more closely. They must prove they are:

Not living an independent life (e.g. financially or residentially)

Dependent on their UK-based parent for care and support

If the child is over 18 but already holds a dependant visa issued before turning 18, they may still be eligible to extend under dependency rules.

2. Proof of Relationship

The Home Office requires evidence of a genuine parent-child relationship. This may include:

Birth or adoption certificate

If you’re planning to build a long-term future in the UK, understanding the UK settlement visa requirements is crucial. Whether you’re applying through the 5-year settlement visa UK route or the 10-year route, this pathway leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — a key step toward permanent residency.

The UK settlement visa is available through different types of visas, such as family, private life, and long residence applications. This guide outlines the requirements, available routes, and eligibility criteria to help you choose the right path for settlement.

Understanding the UK Settlement Visa Route: 5-Year vs 10-Year

Applicants can qualify for settlement under two main UK settlement visa routes:

5-year Settlement Visa UK Route
5-year settlement visa UK Route is the most common route for applicants who meet all the requirements at the outset. It typically includes individuals on family or partner visas who:

Meet the minimum income requirement

Satisfy the English language proficiency standards

Prove a valid reason for living in the UK (such as joining family)

After five years of continuous lawful residence, applicants may apply for ILR.

10-Year Settlement Visa UK Route
This extended route applies to those who may not initially meet the full eligibility criteria but have established a private or family life in the UK. It includes:

Individuals with complex family circumstances

Applicants granted leave based on human rights

People who have lived in the UK lawfully for ten years or more

The 10-year route may be more flexible, but it requires additional applications and longer residence before qualifying for ILR.

What Types of Visas Eligible for Settlement Applications?

Work Visa

You might be able to settle permanently in the UK if you have one of the following visas:

Skilled Worker

Health and Care Worker

International Sportsperson

Innovator Founder

Global Talent

You must have met salary thresholds or occupation-specific requirements throughout your stay.

Switching between qualifying work routes may be permitted, but time spent on non-qualifying visas (e.g., Youth Mobility Scheme, Graduate visa) may not count toward settlement.

Spouse and Family Visa

To apply as a spouse or partner, you and your partner need to be over 18, and your partner must be a British or Irish citizen, have settled in the UK, or have certain other visa statuses (e.g., refugee status).

You will need to prove you are in a genuine relationship, and have been living together for at least 2 years in some cases.

You will also need to meet financial and English language requirements, and potentially pass a Life in the UK test.

Student Visa

The Student visa itself does not directly lead to settlement.

However, a student may be eligible to bring a partner and children under certain circumstances, such as being on a postgraduate research program for 9+ months or having a government scholarship for a 6+ month program.

If you are on a Student visa, you cannot use the time you spend studying in the UK to apply for ILR.

UK Settlement Visa Requirements

To qualify for either route, applicants must meet specific UK settlement visa eligibility requirements. These may vary depending on the type of visa and personal circumstances.

1. Residence Requirement

For the 5-year UK settlement visa route: Continuous lawful residence in the UK for five years under a qualifying visa category

For the 10-year UK settlement visa route: Continuous residence in the UK for ten years with lawful status or based on private life

2. Immigration Status

Applicants must hold valid leave to remain under an eligible visa. Those switching visa categories must ensure they do not overstay or breach immigration laws.

3. Financial Requirement

Financial stability is essential, especially under the 5-year UK settlement visa Route:

As of April 2024, applicants under the 5-year route must meet a minimum income threshold of £29,000 per year

Lower thresholds may apply to those extending visas under transitional arrangements

Additional funds are required for dependent children (£3,800 for the first child and £2,400 for each additional child)

4. English Language Requirement

To meet the UK settlement visa requirements, applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by:

Passing an approved English test at CEFR A1 level or higher (A2 or B1 for extensions or ILR)

Holding a degree taught in English

Being a citizen of a majority English-speaking country

5. Life in the UK Test

All applicants for ILR under both routes must pass the Life in the UK Test, which assesses knowledge of British customs, history, and laws.

Secure your future in the UK, contact British Connections today for expert guidance on your settlement visa application.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) via UK Settlement Visa

After completing the required years under the settlement visa UK route, applicants may apply for ILR if they:

Have not spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period

Still meet all relevant financial, accommodation, and language criteria

Have passed the Life in the UK Test

ILR grants freedom from immigration control, allowing holders to live and work in the UK without restrictions. It is a significant step toward British citizenship.

UK Settlement Visa Application Process

Step 1: Determine Eligibility and Route

Decide whether you qualify for the 5-year or 10-year route based on your immigration history and current circumstances.

Step 2: Gather Supporting Documents

Applicants must prepare a portfolio including:

Proof of continuous residence

Immigration status documents

Evidence of income and employment

English language test certificate

Accommodation details

Step 3: Submit the Online Application

Applications are made via the UK government website. Biometric information (photo and fingerprints) is required at an approved visa centre.

Step 4: Wait for a Decision

Processing times vary, but most applicants receive a decision within up to 12 weeks.

Domestic workers must receive this hourly rate for every hour worked, including overtime. Employers must also maintain proper wage records and ensure payments are made regularly and transparently.

In addition to fair pay, workers must be provided with:

Adequate rest periods

Paid annual leave

Sick leave provisions

A written statement of employment terms

Any deviation from these standards could result in legal action or penalties. British employment law takes labour exploitation very seriously, and both parties are advised to ensure full compliance.

How to apply for a UK passport renewal from abroad? If you are looking for guidance and assistance, we provide a comprehensive UK passport renewal checklist, along with an outline of the required supporting documents for a standard UK passport renewal. Additionally, we offer solutions for obtaining an emergency passport if needed. In this article, we will cover everything you need to know.

Apply for Your First UK Passport

Owning a UK passport confirms your identity and grants you greater convenience for various official matters. For UK citizens, obtaining a UK passport simplifies travel and documentation processes.

To apply, you will need to complete the official application form, provide recent photos, and submit documents to verify your identity. However, the UK government has specific requirements for each step in this process. To ensure a smooth experience, British Connections offers expert assistance for UK citizens residing in Hong Kong, helping with document preparation, inspection, and submission.

UK Passport Renewal Checklist – Check If Your Passport is Fit for Travel

Possessing a valid UK passport is a fundamental requirement; however, it is equally essential to ensure that your passport meets the regulations before your departure. Failing to meet these requirements can lead to delays or even denial of entry. Below is a comprehensive UK passport renewal checklist to help you assess the current status of your passport and determine if you need to renew your passport:

1. Ensure Your UK Passport Meets Validity Requirements:

Generally, most countries in Asia require 3 to 6 months of validity on your passport when entering the country. However, for entry into the EU, your UK passport must have at least 3 months of validity remaining from the date you plan to leave, and it must not have been issued more than 10 years prior to your entry into the EU. You may find a clear example below:

If you plan to enter France on June 1, 2024, and leave on June 10, 2024, your passport must have at least 3 months of validity from your planned departure date. This means your passport must be valid until at least September 10, 2024, and not longer than 10 years from the issue date.

2. Inspect the Condition of your Passport:

Validity is the first item on the UK passport renewal checklist, but you should examine your passport as well for any stains, tears, or damages. Your personal information must be readable. If pages are missing or there is damage to the photo page your passport may not serve as valid proof of identity.

Additionally, it is suggested that you have between 1 and 3 empty pages on your passport for entering Asian countries, as these pages are often required for visas or entry stamps.

3. Leave Plenty of time for Visa Application:

Make sure you leave enough time for visa processing, ideally at least 1 to 4 weeks, but this depends on the country you are travelling to. If you also need time for UK passport renewal, allow an additional 4 to 8 weeks for the renewal process. This way, you can ensure that you have your new passport in hand before applying for your visa.

4. UK Passport Renewal for the Minors:

UK passports for minors under 16 years old are only issued for 5 years. It is essential for families to be aware of the timelines for UK passport renewal for minors from abroad and to begin the application process in advance of any planned travel.

These are the key items of a UK passport renewal checklist, and while they may seem straightforward, it is easy to overlook them. We recommend reaching out to the advisors at British Connections for further guidance and assistance with inspections.

How to Apply for a UK Passport Renewal from Abroad?

UK Passport Renewal Supporting Documents – What Do You Need to Renew Your UK Passport?

Before the application process, please make sure you have prepared the following UK passport renewal supporting documents:

Your old passport

Application form

Identification documents

Latest photos

These are the basic requirements and additional documents will be required should you be applying for a first, expired passport or having a name change application.

For your convenience, British Connections provides service to complete the application form for you to ensure all required information is accurate. In addition, we will assist you in verifying that your supporting documents for UK passport renewal are in the correct formats, ensuring a smooth and efficient process. Our aim is to simplify your experience and minimize any potential delays in obtaining your new passport.

When Do You Need an Emergency Passport and How to Apply for One?

If you are about to take off, but you find out that your UK passport has expired, lost, or any situations involved as below, you should consider applying for an emergency passport.

Here are some common scenarios that may require an emergency passport:

Expiring passport

Lost or stolen passport

Damaged passport

The emergency passport will serve as a temporary passport, which will cover you for one trip out and back again to help you proceed with your travel plans and ensure your travel plans are not disrupted.

The application process for an emergency passport is relatively streamlined and requires careful preparation. You will need to submit proof of identity, evidence of your passport damage or loss, and your travel details via an online application.

The application begins with filling out forms and collecting photos and documents, which requires accuracy. It will be more efficient to have a professional advisor to complete the process. With this assistance, you can obtain your emergency passport quickly and continue with your travel plans without significant delay.

Among all types of UK visas, Student Visa is perhaps one of the most popular categories as a stepping stone to UK immigration. If you are looking into studying and living in the UK, here is some guidance on applying for a UK Tier 4 Student Visa that you must not miss.

What is a UK Tier 4 Student Visa?

International students aged 16 or over can apply for a UK Student Visa to study at an independent school in the UK for higher education. Previously known as the Tier 4 visa, the UK government has launched a new Student Route on the 5th of October, 2020 to replace it. Visa applicants with an offer from a university or college on hand can begin the process of applying for a UK student visa. As part of the study visa application, you may be asked to attend an interview and answer questions from a UKVI caseworker.

The application fees for a UK Student Visa are:

£363 for a new application from outside the UK

£490 for extending or switching another type of UK visa to a Student visa from inside the UK

While you can start applying for the UK student visa 6 months before your course begins, the earliest by submitting the required documents, the duration of your stay in the country depends on your course and level of study that you have completed.

Who Can Apply for a UK Student Visa?

In order to head-start the application for a UK Tier 4 Student Visa, you have to first collect 70 points on the Point Based System, a system that determines your visa eligibility according to this checklist:

whether you have been offered a place in a recognised institution with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) as proof

your English proficiency by passing an English Proficiency Test from an approved provider

whether you have sufficient financial funding to support your living expenses and tuition fees in the UK. The living costs are estimated to be

£1,334 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses in London

£1,023 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London

UK Student Visa Course Requirements

If you have been enrolled or accepted into one of the following courses, you are eligible for a UK Tier 4 Student Visa:

Full-time:

A below-degree-level course with more than 15 hours of study time per week. That includes A levels (translates to the last two years of high school), apprenticeships, or the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree that equals to RQF level 3, 4, or 5

A course leading to a degree level or above degree-level qualification such as Bachelor, Postgraduate Masters or Doctorate Degree that is the equivalent of RQF level 6, 7, and 8

Part-time:

A course at a degree level above RQF level 7 (including Postgraduate, Master’s, or Doctorate degree).

An approved program for postgraduate doctors or dentists.

An English language course (level B2 or above) in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Documents Required for a UK Student Visa Application

If you are wondering how to start, here are two must-have documents required for a UK Student Visa:

a current passport or other valid travel documentation

a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your course provider

You must be admitted into a recognised course in the UK before you start the Student Visa application.

To accelerate the application process for a UK Tier 4 Student Visa, preparing these documents according to the checklist below does not harm anyone:

proof you have enough money to support yourself and pay for your course – this will vary depending on your circumstances

a valid ATAS certificate if your course and nationality require it

proof of parental or other legal guardian consent if you’re under 18

proof of your relationship to your parent or guardian if you’re under 18

your tuberculosis test results

written consent for your application from your financial sponsor if you’ve received sponsorship for your course fees and living costs in the last 12 months

If you have any concerns or questions about your UK student visa application’s requirements, contact our UK government-trained staff.

With the pandemic situation appearing to ease around the world, are you going to execute your plans of visiting the UK and start packing up? After going through the complex and tedious UK citizenship or visa application process, it is time for you to enjoy the fruits of your labour. While no travel is risk-free during Covid times, here is some information and updates on the UK’s quarantine policy for you to keep in mind before going to the UK during the pandemic.

Entering the UK

Every UK visitor can enter the country with zero legally-bounded rules.

The British government has removed all Covid-19 related international travel restrictions at the moment, meaning you no longer need to complete the previously obligated Passenger Locator Form before you travel. You can step onto UK soil without any additional Covid-19 testing before your flight or quarantine upon your arrival. This applies to all visitors, no matter whether you are fully vaccinated or not. In short, the entry requirements for the UK, at present, are no different than pre-Covid times. The documents you need to show when passing through border control while entering the UK include:

A valid passport

A UK Visa (if needed – with tuberculosis(TB) test results provided)

At one time, the UK government categorised foreign countries in a “Red List” and “Green List”. For certain arrivals coming from countries on the Red List, visitors would have to go through hotel quarantine as a part of the UK entry requirements. Not only has this policy been fully lifted since the end of March, but now, no countries are present on the Red List anymore.

However, with the unpredictable development of the virus, we strongly advise you to keep checking for any policy updates prior to entering the UK.

Leaving Hong Kong

While travelling to England has become easier, as you may know, Hong Kong’s Covid-19 prevention measures and border control are indeed the tricky part of your UK trip.

With the HKSAR government’s new rule of airline control, booking a ticket out of Hong Kong can get extremely challenging. If four or more passengers on a certain airline route test positive, the government can suspend that particular flight route for 14 days. Despite the fact that route bans do not apply to outbound flights, note that flights always come two-way. This restriction has severely affected non-Hong Kong airlines as there has been a huge decrease in the number of flights operated by them entering Hong Kong. In addition to this, unlike the UK, Hong Kong’s weeks-long quarantine requirements upon arrival have had an adverse impact on airline crew. As a result, to avoid the trouble, many European airlines have chosen to even stop flights coming into and out of Hong Kong indefinitely.

As so, make sure you stay updated on Hong Kong’s ever-changing guidelines of domestic air travel. It is helpful if you pay attention to previous bans on airlines to avoid flights that pass by more “risky” transiting cities, or look for airlines that have more flexibility in terms of change in dates, flights, and refunds.

Masks in the UK

Mask-wearing is no longer mandatorily enforced anywhere in the UK. Basically, you can expect to have no restrictions made because of the relaxed approach to Covid-19 cases in the UK. Be it Heathrow airport, entertainment venues, nightclubs, theatres or anything other places where large crowds may gather – all can be legally mask-free. However, always bear in mind that if you are visiting individual venues in the UK, they still own the right to decide whether they require visitors to wear a mask, practise social distancing measures, or ask for a Covid test result and vaccination proof. It is always worth checking before you head anywhere. Also, note that even though the transportation services in England have lifted their face-covering mandate, masks are still strongly encouraged to be worn when you are commuting, given the fact that you will be travelling to places with a large number of people.

Hong Kong has seen a mass amount of relocation to the UK ever since 1997, with locals’ unique and privileged BNO statuses gifted by the UK government. But for those who didn’t retain their British overseas residents’ identities or were simply born after the handover, another popular option has been to apply for a UK Settlement or Spouse Visa – a gateway to British indefinite residence with easier requirements.

Apart from filling in an application form, there is, in fact, much more to do in order to obtain a UK Settlement Visa. Here is a complete guide with 7 insider tips

1. It’s not a must to apply outside of the UK

If you have already entered the country using other types of visa, you could simply switch to apply for a Settlement Visa within the UK upon 6 months of staying. For applicants within the country, you could start and check your UK visa application status by post or online.

2. Marriage is not the only way

There are 4 forms of relationships that are recognised by the British government when it comes to applying for a UK Settlement Visa:

Registered Marriages: a marriage identified internationally by a government with a marriage certificate issued as proof

Civil Partnership: same-sex couples can enjoy equal rights of a married couple

Traditional Marriages: marriages that are not recognised legally and must be further registered at Home Affairs.

Fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner: If you are planning to marry your partner 6 months upon your arrival in England, you can apply for a UK Settlement Visa using this route. Evidence showing an end of your previous relationships (if any) and the intent to get married should be submitted. Note that this type of Visa will expire after 6 months under the immigration rules for the UK.

3. Show the genuineness of your relationship

Another tricky part in Settlement Visa requirements is proving that your relationship is “genuine and subsisting”, in an official way. Bear in mind that all the evidence should be issued within 4 years.

Dig into joint-name official records that show cohabitation for at least 2 years, especially for unmarried couples. Ideally, proof should be provided from government, bank, landlord, medical professional or utility provider documents. These include statements, bills, letters, agreements or service statements that have both your and your partner’s name on them.

If you don’t have any of the aforementioned documents, you can still try your luck with student finance paperwork, one-off bills or letters of voting registrations. In short, evidence is considered more powerful coming from a trusted or public organisation. Tracking and tracing back personal communication is less likely to help with your UK Visa application.

4. There are many ways to prove your English language proficiency

Similar to other countries’ immigration rules, for the UK authority, the IELTS test is one of the options when it comes to proving your knowledge of English. However, there are other factors that exempt you from the hassle, such as:

having an academic qualification researched in English and recognised by the authority

falling into specific age ranges

having special health or care-taking conditions

extending the visa from a family visa

coming from an English-speaking country

5. Various means to meet the minimum income requirement

Many fail to fulfil this, but the financial requirement is the most important (and stringent) procedure when you apply for a UK Settlement Visa. The couple should have a combined income of at least £18,600 per year. When submitting the necessary proof, make sure you include:

salaries from employment and self-employment

cash savings above £16,000

pension money

non-work income like property rentals or dividends

Supporting documents are needed for employees, such as bank statements, pay slips and a letter from your employer.

6. The process can take a long time

On average, the waiting period is around 12 weeks. However, extra time is required if any information needs to be verified, which could be an additional 6 months. Be mindful of the tuberculosis (TB) test – a must-have for all kinds of Visa applicants according to the immigration rules for the UK. The test result will expire after 6 months, so make sure you don’t do it too early or too late.

For urgent cases, you may opt for the priority services with additional costs. This will put your application at the front of the queue. Track your UK Visa application status in the upcoming 5 working days for confirmation.

7. Talk to the Experts

Should you face any difficulties in applying for a UK Settlement Visa, schedule an appointment with our UK government-trained consultants.
