What You Can and Cannot Do

You can:

  • work
  • study (including applying for higher education courses)

You cannot:

  • claim public funds (social welfare benefits)

Your children will be able to:

  • attend school if they are under 18 (all state schools are free)
  • attend education and training if they are aged 16 to 19.

Who Can Apply for a BNO Visa?

You can apply for the BNO visa if you are a British national (overseas). You don’t need a valid British national (overseas) passport to show this, but if your British national (overseas) passport is expired, you should still submit it with your application. If it is lost, you can obtain confirmation from the UK confirming your status. If you need help in doing this, please contact us for assistance. If you’re applying from outside the UK, you and your family members must normally live in Hong Kong. If you want to apply for a BNO visa, one of the requirements is a valid passport. You can use a valid Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport to travel if you have one. Family members Any family member who normally lives with you may also be able to apply for a BNO visa:
  • spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner
  • child (under the age of 18)
  • adult born on or after 1 July 1997 (and their spouse, or child under the age of 18)
  • other family members (parent, grandparent, brother, sister, son, or daughter) in exceptional circumstances where there is a high level of dependency.

Money You’ll Need

You must show that you can accommodate and provide financial support for yourself and your family members for at least 6 months in the UK.

Tuberculosis (TB) Certificate Requirement

If you live in Hong Kong, you must provide a tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from an approved centre.

How to Apply for a BNO Visa

You’ll be able to apply for the BNO visa from 31 January 2021.

If you’re applying as a family unit, you must apply together. The main applicant who is a British national (overseas) should apply first, and they will be given a reference number. Any additional members of the family applying will need to use this reference number on their applications.

PLEASE NOTE: All family members must apply for the BNO visa at the same time as the main applicant, if they apply later, they will not be able to join you later.

Fees 

Visa application fee:

  • £180 for a 30-month visa
  • £250 for a 5-year visa

 

On top of the visa fee, you will also need to pay the immigration health surcharge fee for each of your family members who are applying:

 

For each adult this will be:

  • £1,560 for 30-month visa
  • £3,120 for 5-year visa

 

For each child under the age of 18, this will be:

  • £1,175 for 30-month visa
  • £2,350 for 5-year visa

 

Please note you will still need to pay for certain services, such as prescriptions, dental treatment, eye tests whilst living in the UK.

Settlement and Citizenship

Once you have completed 5 years in the UK you and your family can apply for indefinite leave to remain. After an additional year you may be able to apply for Naturalisation as a British Citizen, please note there are requirements you need to fulfil during your time in the UK prior to you applying for British Citizenship.
